JOB SUMMARY:

 

Responsible for overall direction of Hillandale Laboratory Services which includes, but is not limited to Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Coagulation, and Urinalysis testing in conjunction with North Decatur Laboratory site. Performs job duties in accordance with tenets of laboratory mission and goals. Performs related duties as requested by supervisory personnel. Performs job duties within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies. Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement teams and activities.
  • Participates in supporting the organization’s vision, mission and values and adheres to DeKalb Medical Standards of Behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of DeKalb Medical.
  • Oversees all technical procedures and policies in the department to ensure accurate and timely service.
  • Develops policies and procedures with the North Decatur Laboratory with input from and approval of the Medical Directors and the Laboratory Administrative Director.
  • Oversees activities of the department to ensure compliance with regulatory agency standards, including but not limited to the Quality System Plan.
  • Evaluates and recommends capital equipment purchases.
  • Plans for adequate inventories of supplies, and reagents.
  • Works with IS supervisory staff to ensure proper functioning of the Laboratory module.

 

PERSONNEL

  • Performs annual performance reviews and competency assessment of the Laboratory personnel. Provides performance review input to supervisory staff for evening and night shift staff.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Conducts coaching and disciplinary action, as indicated.
  • Interviews and recommends hiring of qualified applicants as appropriate.
  • Seeks ways to enhance staff development.
  • Participates in and conducts in-service education programs.
  • Responsible for setting standards of quality performance for department.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Ensures payroll records are completed per policy.
  • Monitors and controls salary and non-salary costs in department.
  • Seeks process improvements, innovations and cost reduction strategies.
  • Monitors customer service and initiates corrective action as indicated
  • Participates in committee assignments.
  • Oversee the functions of the department to ensure smooth workflow.

 

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

  • 1. Ensures compliance with independent regulatory agency standards, and federal, state and local
  • Participates in the DeKalb Medical Laboratory Process Improvement Committee activities to ensure process improvement efforts are monitored and improvements observed as applicable.

 

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS Cont’d

  • Participates in the laboratory Compliance Team activities to ensure laboratory compliance with regulatory standards including JCAHO, CAP, FDA, AABB and Ga DHR.

 

QUALITY ASSURANCE

  • Monitors QC data of Laboratory for compliance and trends. Follows-up accordingly Hillandale staff.
  • Reviews unexpected test results and procedural deviations at Hillandale Laboratory (through LIS exception reports).

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

  • Adheres to all laboratory safety policies, exposure control, infection control, hazardous materials, chemical hygiene, and fire.
  • Responds appropriately to fire, disaster, and other emergency preparedness drills.
  • Assures employee adherence to safety policies. Documents employee non-compliance, counseling and further action as required.

PROFESSIONAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITIES

  • Participates in and conducts training classes for DeKalb Medical staff as required.
  • Attends job-related professional seminars, conferences, conventions, workshops and shares information with hospital and department staff.
  • Represents the laboratory and DeKalb Medical to the community, medical staff and other groups as appropriate.

 

TRAINING & EDUCATION

  • Participates in training employees and documenting Performance checklists.
  • Participates in job related inservices/programs either by external seminars, hospital education programs, departmental inservices or research and reports.  Must document 12 hours of educational programs.

  • Communicates complete and pertinent information to appropriate shifts and supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:

·         B.S. degree in Medical Technology or related field, Masters degree preferable in Laboratory Science or Business.

·         Certification by a recognized agency, and fulfillment of all requirements of the Georgia Department of Human Resources for Laboratory Supervisor.

·         Minimum of five (5) years Laboratory technical experience, including at least two (2) years supervisory experience.

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to provide leadership, use independent judgment and make sound decisions.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of all procedures performed.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.

 

  • Performs skills and competencies as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist if applicable.
  • Demonstrates and maintains competencies specific to patient population served.

 

 

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to: Laboratory Administrative Director, Laboratory Medical Director and Pathologists

Positions Supervised: Core Lab Supervisors, Evening and Midnight Coordinator, and Core Laboratory Staff
